2 Jobs: Research Professor at UJ, 1 x permanent and 1 x fixed term

The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Johannesburg has advertised two Research Professorships, one fixed term until 30 April 2019 and one permanent. These positions are open across the humanities disciplines. Primary responsibilities are the publication of excellent research and the supervision of postgraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows. They carry no formal undergraduate teaching responsibilities, although willingness to give occasional lectures on specialised topics is appreciated. The successful candidate is likely to be able to demonstrate a willingness to mentor and supervise as well as a willingness to engage across disciplines. The closing date is 25 October 2015 and details for both jobs are available at http://jobs.uj.ac.za/

JOB: UJ, prediction and/or philosophy of epidemiology

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Johannesburg has a fixed term vacancy expiring 30 April 2020, at level Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor, for someone willing to work on projects related to prediction or philosophy of epidemiology. The vacancy is created by Alex Broadbent’s 5-year appointment as a Dean.

Deadline: 2 August 2015 [NOTE EARLY DEADLINE]

Applicants must hold a PhD in philosophy and must demonstrate strong publication record and potential commensurate with level.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules, postgraduate supervision, research leading to publications, and assisting with administrative duties as determined in consultation with the Head of Department. Typical teaching load in the Department requires undergraduate teaching for no more than three our of the four terms, and usually the Department aims to organise teaching so as to leave two out of four terms free of undergraduate teaching for each of its staff.

JOB: Post Doc – prediction, philosophy of epidemiology, philosophy of science

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Johannesburg seeks to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow to work under the supervision of Prof Alex Broadbent. In particular, ideas for work on (1) prediction or (2) philosophy of epidemiology are welcome; but any area of speciality within the philosophy of science broadly construed (including the philosophy of medicine) will be considered. Please send a CV, cover letter, and writing sample to abbroadbent@uj.ac.za by 26 September 2014. PhD must be in hand. Start date February 2014. Informal inquiries welcome to the same email address.

Postdoc, UJ, Philosophy of Science

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Johannesburg seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to build on its growing strengths in the philosophy of science, broadly construed. The Fellow will pursue his or her own research under the supervision of Alex Broadbent (joining two existing Fellows in the philosophy of science). Relevant research interests fall within the philosophy of science broadly construed, to include the philosophy of epidemiology and medicine, as well as relevant topics in metaphysics and epistemology, notably causation. Applications are also welcome from those with an interest in relevant jurisprudential or political issues, for example the use of scientific or statistical evidence in legal or policy contexts. Any other interesting application will also be considered.

The Fellow may be asked to take on light teaching loads commensurate with career development, but these are not onerous and in duration do not exceed one quarter of the year.

The post is for one year in the first instance but is usually renewable subject to satisfactory publication. Funds for travel and other resources are also available, depending on progress with publications. Salary is 200,000 Rands p/a AFTER tax. Fellows are required to take out basic medical insurance.

Applicants should email the following materials to Alex Broadbent (abbroadbent@uj.ac.za) by 15 July 2013 and can expect a response by 31 July 2013. Informal or pre-application inquiries also welcome.

  1. CV
  2. Writing sample
  3. Indication of proposed research (300-500 words)

Post-doc: Philosophy of Science, University of Johannesburg

The University of Johannesburg seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Philosophy. Any research area will be considered, but it is hoped that the Fellow will work with Dr Alex Broadbent on issues in the philosophy of science broadly construed, and in particular issues related to epidemiology, public health, causation, explanation or prediction (although unconceived alternatives will be considered). The Fellow will be asked to teach one Honours course for one term, out of four in our academic calendar. (This is a light commitment: Honours is a small group (5-10) course for first year postgraduates, whose content usually reflects the interests of the person teaching it.) Applicants should email two pieces of written work of around 8-10k words (e.g. publications, work under review, thesis chapters) along with a CV and covering letter to Dr Alex Broadbent at abbroadbent@uj.ac.uk by 30 June 2012. Doctorate must be in hand at time of commencement. Duration is one year in the first instance, with the possibility of another year, depending on publication performance.
